There are different sound signals for common situations, but there are good reasons why most mariners use the radio to communicate intentions.
The one sound signal everyone should remember is the danger signal of 5 short and rapid blasts.
Sound the danger signal if there is any confusion or doubt whether sufficient action is being taken by the other vessel to avoid collision.
Fog signals are important too.
